Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis. You will need to be able to work independently as well as part of a team, a caring and sensitive approach to work, good communication skills with patients and other health care professionals and a flexible approach to work. The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample b.
Perfoming venepunture in accordance with practice protocols c. Maintaining accurate patient records d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies f.
Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner g.
